The Power of Lean

Updated: Nov 9, 2022

I was listening to one of our customers speak, and during his talk he hit on something that struck me. He talked about how to make his organization lean.

I have often heard the term lean and how it applies to manufacturing. But I have never heard someone talk about it when it came to their maintenance organization.

The customer went on to explain that when you are operating lean, you “Eliminate any action that does not bring value to the customer.” That sounds so simple, why don’t we practice it more often?

Every day in business we see so many actions and activities that happen all around us, but the real question is, do these activities bring value to the customer?

That’s the question we should be asking ourselves and our team. That’s the question we should challenge our team to solve. We should address every problem and solution like the customer was sitting right next to us.

Simply put, lean means creating more value for customers with fewer resources. Isn’t that the goal of business?

Next time you set out to accomplish something with your team, remember to focus on the lean principles and see how skinny you can get.

Until next time…I’m Marty, make every minute count.
