Can two words give you the power to change your life? As simple as it sounds, I believe they can.
In his new book, Joel Osteen shares a profound principle based on a simple truth: the use of the two words "I am" can change the way a person thinks about his or her life. As Joel says, "What follows those two simple words will determine what kind of life you live."
Try it: I am smart. I am strong. I am healthy. Or, I am slow. I am bad at computers. I am lousy at this. The “I ams” coming out of a person’s mouth can determine success or failure.
As a leader, pay attention to the “I ams” your team members use. When they use negative words, it's your job to work with them to understand why they feel that way and give them positive reinforcement and support to change their narrative.
When you think about how powerful words can be, especially when used to describe ourselves, remember that positive thinking can shape our mindset and drive our behavior.
Business and life are challenging enough without adding negative personal thoughts. The more we focus on what follows "I am," the better we will feel about our projects, our jobs, and ourselves.
Until next time…I’m Marty, make every minute count.
